EU Efforts To Combat Climate Change
Keywords:
climate; climate changes; greenhouse gases; global warmingAbstract
As a contribution to keeping global warming below 2 °C, the EU has set a long-term target of reducing its emissions by 80%-95% of 1990 levels by 2050, with developed countries considered a group that takes similar action. To achieve such a reduction in emissions, it is necessary for the EU to become a low-carbon economy.
In 2011, the Commission published a "roadmap" setting out the most cost-effective way to achieve a competitive low-carbon economy by 2050 and including benchmarks for measuring progress. The roadmap shows how different sectors, from power generation to agriculture, can contribute to this goal. By mid-century, electricity generation should be almost 100% carbon-free. In 2050, the EU would use around 30% less energy, becoming more energy efficient. Using more locally produced energy would reduce dependence on imports, and the transition to a low-carbon economy would also involve reducing air pollution and health-related costs.
